Habit vs. Willpower

- POSTED ON: Apr 06, 2011

Successful weight-loss requires establishing new eating Habits.
For successful maintenance of that weight-loss,
one must create a new “normal” which is based on those Habits.

A Habit is a settled tendency or usual manner of behavior.
Specifically here, a behavior pattern acquired by frequent repetition
that shows itself in regularity or increased facility of performance; and
an acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary.

Habit comes from repeated behavior.

Willpower is defined as energetic determination.

Willpower and Habit are related.
because Habits are ESTABLISHED…
i.e. brought into existence via some act of will…
…..one’s choice or determination…
and it initially takes willpower to establish a habit.

It doesn't take willpower to make bad habits. I have many.

Danny, that is an interesting point. I know that it takes willpower to establish "good" or "positive" habits, but I haven't really considered that issue when it comes to "bad" or "negative" habits.

That 12 days will not lead to a slippery slope downwards. The worry is that carb cravings coupled with latent fat cells wanting to expand might derail me. That my new slender body will baloon up again and my cute clothes will not fit. Negative habits can be learned. I had a few from NoS to get out of my head. Great thoughts.

Thanks Karen. I've often been "derailed" for a week or two during vacation, and have not yet personally been successful at avoiding vacation gains....but for me, the key is to IMMEDIATELY get back to my good habits when I return home, and to simply accept my lack of perfection.

If I am still up by the time the beach vacation rolls around, I will eat on plan with a few treats (enjoy key lime pie in FL). I need to plan meals anyway for the family. So to plan meals good for me will already be done. This is a habit developed during my CC process. We have a kitchen, and new recipes from your site, I can fix meals that are both tasty, quick, different and low calorie. I can substitute beer for dt coke or Mi0 water. Snacking is not my problem. This is a good habit I developed from Nos which undid the snacking habit I had developed from South Beach.
