Another Faulty Inference of Causation

- POSTED ON: Oct 23, 2012

It’s easy to make faulty inferences about causation.
Correlation is not Causation.
Let's be careful not to make the same mistake this woman did:

Thanks John. I thought this was an excellent and amusing example of drawing an inference of causation when only a correlation exists.

I think this woman is a little bit off especially on her interpretations of the deer crossings. We dont tell the deer where to cross we just warn the drivers that deer cross here. SHe seems to actually believe that the deer know the signs are there and gravitate to them to cross. This is sad but all in all kinda funny.

Hi Sue, Yes it IS a really funny example of what the news media does all the time. Just because two things EXIST at the same time, doesn't mean that one thing CAUSES the other thing. <3

LOL, thanks for my laugh for the day! They DO live and breed amongst us. On a more serious note, after having a deer drag his hoofs across my windshield at brunch time in uptown Danbury, CT, I purchased a set of deer whistles from Walmart and immediately installed them. It sends out a sound that keeps wild animals away. Highway Patrol states they work. Stay safe for under $10 so you can keep on, keeping on!

Hi Alma, Thanks for sharing about the deer whistles. It sounds like a great idea for people who are in deer populated areas.

It's scary that some people think like this!

Jethro, it's easy for everyone to think like this. Of course this video is an extreme example of the confusion of correlation with causation, but the media does this to us ALL THE TIME.
