Who We Can Be

- POSTED ON: Jun 07, 2011

Sometimes I choose not to organize my Thoughts,
and just write about them in a random manner
Today is one of those days.

This is my first morning weighing in without any cast.
I am pleased about this.
However, even a slight use of my wrist, arm and hand is painful.
I am unable to grasp anything; can’t curl my hand into a fist,
or position my wrist above the keyboard in a typing position.
So recovery appears to be more distant than I anticipated,
and I am working to readjust my expectations
about being able to quickly resume my normal activities.

Today my weight is only one pound higher
than it was on Good Friday morning,
which is the day I broke my wrist.
During this period, I’ve managed to keep my calories
lower than is normal for me, but I’ve had to spend
a great deal of time at rest, which reduced my energy burn.
I am both grateful for, and dissatisfied by, my weight results,
and I believe that is a fairly normal reaction.

One of my sisters-in-law died this week,
which reminds me that life is short and precious.
Looking at the Big Picture shows me that
my temporary disability and discomfort is actually
only a minor inconvenience.

Sorrow comes to us all, and there are times we feel sad.
But even during times of sadness, I believe that each of us has the ability
to work on adjusting our mental attitudes toward Acceptance and Gratitude,
and that by placing our focus on the things that are positive
we can make life far more pleasant, both for ourselves and for others.

I know what a relief it is to get the cast off. I,too, was surprised by how long it took to get my hand back in working condition. When the doctor first told me it would take about a year, I thought he was joking! But it was true. The physical therapy is great, though, and really helps with the pain and swelling. I actually had fun picking objects out of the rice bowl, etc. Just be careful because you will be off balance for awhile. Our bodies really are wonderfully created to be able to heal like they do.

Hi TexArk, I've often thought of you during these past weeks of my recovery. It was so remarkable for you to drop weight by sticking with your diet and food logging during your incapacity...AND while being away from home at the same time.

Through the years I have discovered that I gravitate to "transparent" people. People who are willing to "know themselves" and are open to self-examination and change become my friends. I like to think this is who I am and I believe this is who you are. Thank you for sharing yourself.

I remember how frustrated I was (years and years ago) when the cast was removed and I could do LESS than I could with the cast on! (The cast protected it from movements that hurt...) It did get better. And you will too. :) You have a marvellous attitude. Sending support and best wishes.

KCCC, Thank you for your encouragement and kind words. I must admit that this is one of those lifetime events which is requiring me to work long and hard on Gratitude and Acceptance in order to keep my attitude positive.
